The departement of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes of the UZ Brussel offers expertise in all area of pediatric endocrinology : from diabetes, problems with growth en pubertal development, lipid disorders and eating disorders. The 4 pediatric endocrinologists have a broad clinical experience and expertise in diagnosis, treatment and global approach of complexe hormonal problems from birth untill adolescence.

Specialized treatment of diabetes

Our pediatric diabetes team offers specialized service for the diagnosis, care, education and acceptance of diabetes type 1 and 2 in children.

The psychological support is an important part of our diabetes programme.

We are an expert center with focus on technological innovation for the treatment of diabetes and perform research to improve the care for diabetes patients.

A 24/24- 7/7 availability through an on call duty system is guaranteed.

Specialized treatment for obesity

We offer investigation and treatment for children with overweight and obesity.

A multidisciplinary approach with combined investigations on 1 day, expertise from pediatric endocrinologists, dieticians, psychologists and physical therapists is used to propose an individual approach.

We are an expert center taking the lead in clinical studies for new medical treatments for obesity.

We are a recognized European reference center for rare genetic forms of obesity

In exceptional cases, surgical treatment kan be indicated in collaboration with the experienced surgical team within UZ Brussel.

Specialized treatment of Eating disorders

The eating clinic in the UZ Brussel is an intense collaboration between the services of pediatrics and child -and -adolescent psychiatry. The focus is on children and youngsters between 10-16 years with an eating disorder, the main group being (pre)adolescents with classical anorexia nervosa, but also patients with boulemia nervosa and atypical eating disorders are being treated. the approach is global and multidisciplinary and consists the somatical treatment and eating behaviour, individual psychotherapy, multi family therapy, family counselling an/or therapy.

Specialized clinics for syndromes 

We organize specialized clinics for specific syndromes with endocrine and hormonal problems like Klinefelter syndrome, prader Willi syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Turner syndrome and Down syndrome

Collaboration

Our team is a reference center within the European Reference Network (ERN) , member of the  European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) and the  International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). On natioanlevel, our team is member of the Vlaamse diabetescentra voor kinderen en adolescenten (VDKA), the Belgian Association for the Study of Obesity (BASO) and the  Belgian Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BESPEED).
