Queen Fabiola Children’s University Hospital

Inaugurated in 1986, QFCUH is the only Belgian university hospital entirely reserved for children’s medicine : all is conceived for them and for their parents. From birth to adolescence, the children receive there the most complete care in respect of the Children in Hospital Charter. As a public medico-surgical hospital of 183 beds, QFCUH guarantees quality care and modern medicine accessible to all children.

The unit of pediatric endocrinology diagnoses and treats patients for 0 to 18 years with endocrine/hormonal problems. Regardless of the condition, informing the patient and their family is the hart of our concern : the patient is an active participant in his/her care with a good comprehension of his/her condition and treatment. We regularly inform the treating general physician and pediatrician by mail.

the dual approach physician-nurse is destined to make the patients expert in his/her disease by informing and listening. The specific blood tests are performed to determine the origine of the problem at the one-day clinic (One Day clinic, salle 60, 3rd Floor)

Some rare endocrine disease may implicate the need for follow up by several specialists. The communication between these different specialists is realized by :

  • multidisciplinary meetings at HUDERF
  • collaboration with other Belgian teams (Belgian study group for pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology)
  • On an european level, the center is integrated and actively participates to the EDNO-ERN network, organised by the European Comission. The European  union has a large resource of knowledge and competences and their ideas should benefit all patients with rare diseases.
  • The transition towards adult endocrinological care is and important step to succeed. The team of pediatric endocrinology ad HUDERF and adult endocrinology at Hôpital Erasme work together since several years to obtain this goal.

In our departement, we take care of :

  • growth problems, short stature and tall stature, intra uterine growth retardation
  • early and late puberty
  • growth hormone deficiency, septo-optic dysplasia and hypopituitarism
  • variations in sexual development, Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome
  • bone disease and distubances in phosphorus-calcium metabolism
  • congenital adrenal hyperplasia and other adrenal pathology
  • endocrine consequences of oncological pathology and it’s treatment
  • endocrine aspects of adopted children
  • diabetes insipidus and distubances of water/salt metabolism
  • congenital and obtained thyroid disorders
  • hypoglycemia and congenital hyperinsulinism

Our team concentrates on clinical research in original aspects,  the genetic or environmental origine of certain rare endocrine conditions. mostly this consists of retrospective analysis in order to better understand certain conditions and improve the care for these patients
